Congratulations to our classroom's top leaders: Bentley, Nolan and Rylynn! You all set a great example for your peers!
In Social, we are learning about Leadership in different communities around the world. We look at the government or leader in countries such as Peru, Tunisia, Ukraine and India. The information is made relatable by talking about Canada's Prime Minister as well as Edgerton's Mayor. We discuss the responsibilities of someone in a leadership role. The class spoke about what makes leaders in our classroom. They offered candidates for a Class Leader and I chose three that I agreed were top leaders. Each student got a ballot and we voted for a Class Leader as someone who should be looked up to based on their choices, behaviors, and way of thinking.
Congratulations to our classroom's top leaders: Bentley, Nolan and Rylynn! You all set a great example for your peers!

We concluded our multiplication unit with a game Array Battles! They had lots of fun and got to practice their multiplication skills too. Some have even been playing in their free time! Talk about incentive.
What a wonderful surprise this morning. Seeing students applying their knowledge! Riley L and Malcolm created a fort using beams and pillars! Good job boys!
Round 1 is complete! The first round checked to see if each book was a 'good' book based on the criteria we developed before the tournament. If both books in a competition met the criteria, then we took a favorite vote. The top 8 have been decided: Andrew's Loose Tooth, Noah's Bark, Rabbits & Raindrops, Splat the Cat: Up in the Air at the Fair, The School Bus Driver from the Black Lagoon, Tractors, Two Red Tugs, and Stuck.
The next round will be based on preference. Students are practicing giving preference with an explanation and examples. Based on student choices, the Top 4 will be formed. Stay tuned!
Eventually for the sake of time, we decided we better try the mass of 300 cm cubes with the other beams because we couldn't believe how strong it was. To break the tie, we decided to put all the cm cubes back in their container and test the weight of all 500 cm cubes! The result...the box girder did not hold up. The accordion beam on the other hand...WOW!
Students were introduced to how a clock runs today. It was a pleasant surprise to hear that many students already had a huge handle on the concept. We talked about how to read a manual clock and discussed the important parts of it. Then they were asked to build a clock at their desk using a bag of goodies. We will be spending more time with clocks and on telling time both from a manual clock and in a problem solving context. Of course, we had to get in some play time too!
Today in Science, in our Testing Things unit, we were asked to help out a contractor. He told us that in the project he is working on, they are going to install a giant steel hamburger on top of a restaurant. They are deciding on either an arch or square shape underneath the heavy burger! We are testing whether an arch shape or a square shape will be able to hold more mass and therefore the steel burger! Check out our tests.
