Thank you to the Edgerton Fire Department - Jon Koroluk with Michael Krinbill and Billy Bogen! What a great way to start off your day then to hang out with firefighters and talk about safety. Students were tested on their knowledge of smoke alarms and safe places to meet outside in case of an emergency. We played Truth or Dare, watched as Nolan, Malcolm and Rylynn imitated a smoke detector, and learned a new fist bump involving fries! The fire chief asked families to talk at home about what place outside would be a safe spot to meet in case of an emergency like a fire AND wants parents to burn some food to test those smoke detectors! Just kidding...but checking to make sure your smoke detectors aren't expired is also a piece of the homework. I am currently holding 16 'treat bags' hostage int eh classroom until these two tasks are completed. |

Sometimes all you need are sticky notes to make learning fun!
We spend the last few social classes exploring the 2Learn.ca interactive website on Alberta's regions: http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/sszi/en/index.html . Then I challenged to students to sort through the geographical features of each and determine which region the facts were of. They were so focused and serious about the task, and truly worked those brains analyzing.
You were all here is spirit. Students wrote what they were thankful for on a pumpkin. We had to make a last minute change and eat picnic style but everyone was cheerful and social. Till next year!
Thank you parents and students for contributing worms and dirt to begin vermicomposting in the classroom. In the above pictures you can see that we have begun adding ingredients such as newspaper, organic matter like vegetables, bread, plants and dried leaves. Students pulled out all the worms first so that we could add the right amount of organic matter, half as much as their are worms. The day after this picture was taken we received two more pails of soil and worms so we have now officially started.
Now, students will help to mix the contents every so often and we will watch as the worms do what they do as decomposers!
Learning about the timeline of dinosaurs in Alberta's history is both fascinating and tricky to wrap your head around sometimes. As a culminating project, students were told to choose an interesting point on the timeline and create a comic of the event. They did have some creative license to add funny elements and facts to help move along the plot. Their finished products are wonderful. I found it interesting where the students chose to focus their comic on the timeline.
