We finished Muggie Maggie by Beverly Cleary a couple weeks ago. The students were learning cursive handwriting right alongside the main character, Maggie. This book had many challenging juicy words. We were able to practice using the dictionary quite a few times. We learned what words like indignant meant and expanded our vocabulary. In the picture, students are trying to read the teacher's cursive handwriting. Just like Maggie, they are learning to decipher cursive as well as write it. Students, write what you thought of the book, in the comment section. |

Round 1 is complete! The first round checked to see if each book was a 'good' book based on the criteria we developed before the tournament. If both books in a competition met the criteria, then we took a favorite vote. The top 8 have been decided: Andrew's Loose Tooth, Noah's Bark, Rabbits & Raindrops, Splat the Cat: Up in the Air at the Fair, The School Bus Driver from the Black Lagoon, Tractors, Two Red Tugs, and Stuck.
The next round will be based on preference. Students are practicing giving preference with an explanation and examples. Based on student choices, the Top 4 will be formed. Stay tuned!
Korbin says, "I liked the book because it was funny when Scrawny got stuck in the vent!"
"I think the funny part was when they were trying to leave Scrawny at the pond but he keeps following them back", Nolan explained. Ariana says, "My favorite part is when Scrawny is waking everyone up at night!" "I liked when John sister's were yapping at Scrawny because he was keeping them up", Hugh says.
