Our next science unit is Wheels and Levers, so students were introduced to the meaning of a simple machine and their purpose. We started with a simple experiment, comparing the force needed to push a brick across the carpet to doing so with pencils as rollers underneath. The rollers reduce friction and allow us to use less force to move the brick. To explore further, students were given two balls of plasticine and asked to make each as flat and thin as possible, with one using only their hand, and with the other an example of a roller from inside their desk. Students walked around to see if they could tell which was which. They deduced that the roller is a simple machine because it helps decrease the amount of effort we have to put in. |
