I am so very proud of our class on a successful first 'formal' debate. Students had been learning about Alberta's beginning and how the land was formed. Based on fossil findings, Alberta is lucky enough to have proof of dinosaurs existing over 65 million years ago. After creating a dinosaur timeline which included the dinosaurs life and death, as well as the first fossil finding in Canada in 1874, students were asked to take a side. They were asked if they thought a fossil found by someone not from the area found a fossil, should they be able to keep it or should they surrender it to the government. The students took off with the idea and fee off each other's perspectives and opinions. Everyone was 'professional' and no one 'gave up' or 'got sad'. Well done group! |
Property of the person... - finder's keepers - no laws at the time - want to keep some history for themselves - historic souvenir - person put in the work - add to collection of home land | Property of the government... - part of the land and history of the place found - add to collection of native land - study and learn more about location found - keep track of fossils found in area - government makes decisions - difficult to move/ fragile - person finding it may not be knowledgeable enough to remove it safely or interpret it - to be properly cared for |
